The authors, with grim but charged dispassion, unspool paragraph after paragraph dramatizing the arrival of "muscle hijackers" (as opposed to pilots), the thinking of CIA director George Tenet (regularly referred to, along with most other players here, simply by last name) and plot co-coordinator Khalid Sheikh Mohammad ("KSM") among thousands of others, and the other ways and means by which a "foreign" incursion caused catastrophic domestic damage. Distilling an enormous amount of information in plain language, with unerring pitch and a perfect feel for when to gloss ("Dubai, a modern city with easy access to a major airport..."), the book's implied narrator sticks as close as possible to how real people made real decisions, and, when stymied in considering a factor or set of factors, is willing to say so. In so doing, this multi-author document produces an absolutely compelling narrative intelligence, one with clarity, a sense of shared mission and an overriding desire to do something about the situation. At the same time, with quotational chapter headings like " 'We Have Some Planes' " and " 'The System Was Blinking Red,' " the authors never forget that they are communicating in a medium that has a lot of stylistic resources for holding one's attention; they draw liberally on the most tried and true. Given what hangs in the balance, it is not a stretch to compare this document to The Federalist Papers, in the sense that the book is designed to foster the debate by which the country will reimagine itself through its bureaucracy. You are also given a deeper back-story for Jigsaw, (Tobin Bell, again deliciously malevolent) and the lady that appeared in his flashbacks. Other characters reappear as pawns in a dangerous game, as the dearly departed seems to have left posthumous recruitment tapes for SWAT Commander Rigg. Along with the typical ominous warnings, Rigg is led through the well-known series of SAW traps as Jigsaw tests his mettle. At the end of this test are two other fellow officers, including a returning Donnie Wahlberg, restrained to another nefarious device. As you can guess, not everything goes according to plan. The final twist is a doozy, and for a change, hard to see coming. The script, which plays out more like a mystery/whodunit than a horror show, is what really bumps this movie up. Man of the Year (Full Screen Edition) (2006) A comedy with serious intentions, Man of the Year attempts to challenge the audience's notions of what is and isn't real when it comes to politics. Tom Dobbs (Robin Williams) is a popular political talk show host. As a lark, he runs for president and wins. The thing is, he's not any more unqualified than the other candidates, so his victory doesn't seem quite so outrageous. But when it turns out that the computer ballot firm responsible for tallying all the votes may have had a glitch--and that a recount would negate his win--mayhem ensues and the film segues from comedy, to drama, and back to comedy (sort of) again. Directed by Barry Levinson (Diner, Wag the Dog), the film doesn't take advantage of Williams' natural humor or charm. He at times appears to be chomping at the bit to unleash a comedic tirade or two, only to be held back by stiff lines. Williams only truly appears to be enjoying himself when trading lines with Laura Linney, who portrays the hapless do-gooder at the ballot firm who's being set up to appear unreliable. With some fine performances by a supporting cast that includes Jeff Goldblum, Lewis Black, and the inimitable Christopher Walken, Man of the Year occasionally hints at greatness. Though Lucas is a drug pusher, with a fierce temper, he's also a family man who looks out for those who look out for him. While the movie does show scenes of users of his product ruining their lives, you could argue that he's not the one forcing them to use drugs, he's just taking advantage of the fact that there will always be those who do. He's certainly better than the corrupt police who would rather look the other way so as not to kill the cash cow. At least he's not a hypocrite. The two great actors, Crowe and Washington, do not play in the same scene until the end of the movie. The film is a slow but well written buildup to its' climactic end. She's the second-oldest sibling, much different than her sisters and, according to her mother, probably the least likely to attract a suitor. There seems to be something between Elizabeth and a stolid fellow named Darcy (Matthew MacFadyen), but it's certainly not love -- she claims at one point that she will "loathe him for all eternity." But that's before events take a surprising turn and the taciturn young man ingratiates himself with the family. Due to its fairly large contingent of characters, Pride & Prejudice boasts an unusual array of plot complications, but Wright, working from an unusually cogent adaptation by screenwriter Deborah Moggach, effortlessly glides over the story's rough patches and keeps his storyteller's eye trained at all times on Elizabeth, around whose intoxicating personality much of the intrigue revolves. From both visual and technical standpoints, there's nary a flaw in this well-produced period romance, and with the radiant Knightley appearing in a character that plays to her strengths as a performer -- the conveyance of passion, determination, and generosity of spirit -- this Pride & Prejudice becomes a joyous viewing experience.
